For years, residential solar energy was primarily a conversation about the panels on your roof. The core conversation has officially shifted from the solar modules on the roof to the energy storage box on your wall. The preliminary program includes two participation options. One would allow customers to retain control of their batteries while receiving a small annual enrollment incentive and performance payments for responding to utility events. The other would offer a much larger upfront incentive in exchange for allowing Georgia Power to control a significant portion of the battery for ten years.

Final equipment requirements, application procedures, and customer agreements have not yet been released.

Homeowners do not necessarily need to wait for the program to open before getting ready. A battery evaluation can identify the appropriate system size, electrical requirements, backup priorities, and likely program eligibility in advance.
